[Ethiopia] Ecojun! Take care of our water (1)

Summer of 2015, Ecojun Comapany(CEO, Junseo Lee), social enterprise which develop eco-friendly designed products, suggests to Bishoftu, Ethiopia, where KVO works. To renovate water supply plant of our center and do preventive actions of water borne disease for children. These are what we needed to do so we worked with Ecojun right away, and had a successful outcome. Lets see how it worked.

First of all, we did a field survey to check accurate condition about local water supply plant.

As you knows, we can get a clean water whenever we want. But in Ethiopia, especially the town Bishiftu where we located, is totally different. They have to use public drinking water utilities directly operated by government. In Bishoftu, there are 9 area and each of them has 1 public drinking water utility. But it only opens for 2 hours a day and except of that time, its covered by barbed-wire fence and only allowed for payed person, ‘public drinking water utility’, sounds absurd.

Blackout and cut off the water is common things in this town and they don't have other well which can use freely except one in KVO center, villagers always have the perennial problem of water shortage. And whats more, theres no drainage system. That means, villagers lives in unsanitary place and all of them are exposed to various disease. Thus, for the villagers the well we have is like a rain for a drought. But the pump of well worn out cause its used by more then 10 years.

The facility renovation of well was necessary for KVO because the well was there for the public good and the villagers can use it for free also, KVO and Ecojun decided to renovate the well to satisfy the needs of villagers.

And therefore, we selected the local company involved in well, bought various components of well. When we couldn't buy a component, we made to order and then we started to renovate the well.

Please stay with us how it worked.

- to be continued.
