[Ethiopia] Ecojun! Take care of our water (3)

This is the story of preventive action about water borne disease. Last time, we posted the beginning and the end about the renovation of well in KVO, Bishoftu, Ethiopia.

Now we are going to explain about water borne disease which our children in Ethiopia can easily get. Also, present how we did the preventive action about water borne disease to our children in Ethiopia.

Water borne disease is the diseases caused by when people drinks unclean water.

Vibrio Vulnificus Septicemia, Bacillary dysentery, Typhoid, Cholera, etc are typical diseases of water borne disease.

Infant mortality rate of countries where has enough foods and clean environment are lower than the others. That means if we secure the clean water and enough food, then we can prevent 80% of the infant mortality rate.

Water borne disease is frequent in Ethiopia. Because of an entozoon, eating nutrients in child’s body, children who has water borne disease may have the symptoms like amblyopia, color change of pupil, physical disability, etc. For the children living in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, Water borne disease is not a simple problem. Especially growing children’s case, it may interrupt their growing. Moreover, it can cause sight and physical disability. We have to recognize the magnitude of this disease.

29th of July, 2015, We started preventive action of water borne disease aimed at 100 lower grade children among the KVO center.

We visited Bishoftu General Hospital located 30min away from KVO center and had examine stool test. Depends on the result of stool test, gave a anthelmintic to take. In some serious cases, gave a pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of infectious diseases. Unfortunately, 46 children couldn't take a rain check on stool test because they didn't have sufficient meal or were weak that couldn't pinched a loaf.

Alelegn Yewalashet Asemamaw, one of our children who took a stool test, 5 years old, likes running and hanging out with his friends. His future hope is a doctor. He was small as same age group go, his weight was 8kg less than his 4 years old younger brother.

In this stool test, Alelegn shows serious symptom of water borne disease so he got a pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of infectious diseases.

To give a correct method of take a medicine, local medical team and KVO worker visited his home and explained to his mother. His mother wasn't on a good condition neither, but she thanked to our medical team and KVO worker. We brought into strong relief the fact that having enough meal, drinking clean water and staying healthy living condition is important to Alelegn to get better. And also, we promised to his mother that KVO will make an effort to offer well-balanced meal to our children.

To date, we have been told what we did about construction of water supply plant improvement and preventive actions of water borne disease.
